CHURCH. St Luke. MEMORIALS. Effigy of Sir Humphrey Swynnerton d1562 on window sill on N side of nave E end. The effigy of his wife Cassandra (Giffard) d1562 is on the sill of the facing window in S wall; they were separated from a chest tomb at the time of the 1743 rebuilding. There were other Swynnerton tombs before this period (LGS p211). Benefactions board dated 1861 - the Lord of the Manor of Great Saredon charged five shillings on Bentley Green to be paid by the occupier every Mid Summer Day 1697: Henry Vernon 1732 gave 40 shillings: 40 shillings from the occupier of Tranter’s Croft in Cheslyn Hay: ”The Sum of 20 shillings to be paid annually by the occupier of The Quarry Flat, alias The Stone Pit Leasow in Little Saredon for the distribution of Bibles, Testaments, & Prayer Books among those children who have said The Catechism well. This Charity is lost The Parties occupying the land have refused to make any payment since the year 1828”: Mrs knight of Cannock by will dated 1847 gave to the minister of Shareshill £5 annually (less income tax). WW1 roll of honour, plus four names from WW2 on paper in a frame below. Rev. Wilfred Ernest Walkerdine M.A. vicar to 1957. Rev. Edward Downing vicar 1968-79 (d1980). GLASS MEMORIALS. E window side lights - Henry Vernon of Hilton Park d1855 aged 26 son of H.C. Vernon. E window centre light - Joshua Price of Featherstone d1856. FURNISHINGS. Commandments, Creed, Lord’s Prayer boards. NOTE. C14 wall painting was discovered in 1965, there is an illustration of a detail of it in a picture frame. Unusual Tuscan entrance porch built by the Vernons c.1743. Matchstick model of the church made by S.J.T. Hill. IN THE CHURCHYARD. Broken chest tomb - Marianne Petit daughter of John Meslin-de-Glatigny in Normandy & wife of Louis Petit des Istans in Normandy (who died at Naples a Brigadier General in the British Army) d1743, were they Huguenots? Chest tomb - William Adcock died on board H.M.S. Windsor Castle June 30 1823 aged 19. Unintentionally amusing inscription on William Bickford’s headstone which tells that he was late of Paradise (a district near Coven), not that he was presently in Paradise! Eneas Frederick Starkey accidently killed May 28 1902 aged 14. Augustus Leveson Vernon of Hilton Park d1925 & wife Selina Anne Vernon d1930 & son Walter Bertie William Vernon d1948 & wife Ester Hodgson Vernon d1957. Frederick Adams accidently killed Oct. 9 1933. Trevor Turner accidently killed May 7 1967. William Pinson one of the churchwardens who has his name under the clockface. W. Hodgkins worked for the Vernon family & tended their graves here d1982. ‘Pal’ a dog, his small scroll stone was removed from the Vicarage garden. Thanks to Rev. Smith for his help.

Sarah Elizabeth Butler & Catherine Ann Hadden Butler. FURNISHING. Font of Norman origin, it stood for many years outside the church after the old church ceased to be in use. Church chest. These from SHOS vol 2 p37: S side of church in centre of churchyard Alexander Ward d1663?: Same position as previous Henry Ward d1661? both gravestones have amusing long epitaphs: Edward Lake d1701: Sarah Ingram d1751: William Smyth (had benefaction board in the old church) had long remained in ruins much to the repoach of the people of Upper Stonnall, to whom he had left his charity to: The son of Richard & Mary Burgess of Quarndon, Leics. he killed himself at the Welsh Harp in Upper Stonnall where he came as a traveller in the stage coach.

Edward Aston ..... his 2nd daughter wife of Henry Gresnold d1716 aged 33 leaving behind her one daughter. Floorslab on alter steps defaced - John Blakemore had issue one son & three daughters d1717, also his grand children. Two floorslabs on the altar steps defaced - Catherine Blakemore. Catherine Blakemore wife of John Blakemore also Catherine Blakemore (spinster) d1729. Rev. C.R. Bradburne vicar of Sherriffhales-cum-Woodcote d1891. Screen - WW1 dead & all Sherriff Hales families. Reredos panelling & altar - Rev. Charles Randal Bradburne 1881-91 erected 1923. Candle holders - John Tomlinson 1923. Communion rails - M.E. & L. Whittle & family 1923. On October 10 1926 in two hours & 55 minutes a peal of Grandsire Doubles 5040 changes being 42 six scores, with 10 different callings was rung on the bells in the tower. Three sanctuary lamps to commemorate the fathers of the Oxford Movement 1833 - 1933, also the 25 year ministry of Rev. Robbin Abney Giles, and a rememberence lamp to those who died in WW1. Organ - John Lovekin d1940 chorister, bell ringer & parish clerk for a great many years. Foster Abney Giles killed in action Malaya 1941. Choir stalls - WW2 dead. Brian Abney Giles d1960. Robbie Abney giles d1967. Incumbents list from 1319. GLASS MEMORIALS. Two composite plates made up from ancient glass from Lilleshall Abbey. E window - The Hammonds family 1923. To commemorate the baptism of John Alexander Strickland 1943 & Mary Ann Strickland 1944 (both emigrated to Canada with their parents). IN THE CHURCHYARD. Ancesters of the present Bishop of Tasmania.

Silverdale

CHURCH. St Luke. MEMORIALS. Large gothic memorial with portrait to Francis Stanier of Silverdale d1856 at Madeley Manor, interred at Wolstanton. Edith Mabel daughter of Charles H.E. Graeme Capt. 104th Regt. & Susan Mary d1866 aged 34 at Madeley Manor, lies buried in the churchyard. Alfred John Harvey d1899 aged 17, & Albert Harvey Lowe d1904 aged 19 - tribute by St Luke’s Bible class. Rev. George Armitage B.A. 1st vicar of the church d1900 buried at Hampstead. Peal of bells was dedicated by the Ven: J.H. Crump M.A. Archdeacon of Stoke-on-Trent 1907 at cost of £500. Bertram Arthur Harding d1913 aged 26 he was a lieut. in the Silverdale Company 5th Batt. Lichfield Regt. of the Church Lads’ Brigade. John Fernyhough killed in action in France 1918 aged 20. George Ryder 5th North Staffs. Regt. d1918 aged 23 as POW at Fishback, Germany. The screen to those who died in WW1, the cross above is in memory of Mr Arthur Street. Copy of ‘The Light of the World’ by William Holman Hunt, in memory of Laura Ellen Moore d1927 aged 35. Bookcase - James Gee d1931 & Elizabeth Gee d1937. Organ rebuilding - Katherine Wrench 1963. Mother’s Union Banner - Audrey Mary Sylvester 1986. Curtain over piscina - Marion Jean Oakes. Candle holder by altar - Hiram & Olive Harrison. The Light of Christ Banner dedicated on Mothering Sunday 1990 to Ethel Joan Bloor. GLASS MEMORIALS. Philip & Reginald, infant children of Francis & Caroline Stanier Broade 1865 & also erected by Mary Stanier to memory of her daughter Lucy 1860. Mary Ann Jane Flack 1880. Modern glass with Scouts badge emblems - Cyril Harvey, Group Scout leader in thanks giving of 50 years of scouting at Silverdale 1929-79. S side window designed by Jane Gray of Shrawardine (1994) - Norman John Simpson d1985 (who was the first person baptised in this church) & wife Muriel Corden d1984. IN THE CHURCHYARD. Foundation stone at foot of W wall laid by Alice Helen Francis wife of John Charles Salt 1893, note Francis is spelt the male way. Her name appears correctly as Alice Helen Frances Salt on her gravestone. John Charles Salt founder of the church (brother of William Salt).

Slitting Mill

CHURCH. St John the Baptist. Built by 1892. MEMORIALS. Green altar frontal - Arthur Dutton, John Bush, George H. Crutchley, Joseph Holdcroft, Aaron Holdcroft, Henry Thompson, who all died in WW1. Elizabeth Gardiners inscription in the lectern bible (STMSM Nov 1975 pp6,15p). FURNISHINGS. Reredos has this inscription on the back - ‘Mary Gardner, the Stone House Rugeley 1910’ there is a tradition that she carved it herself. The bell in the bell tower is from the stables at Hagley Hall given by C.S. Wheildon (Church Guide by Sheila M. Simpson).
