Betley - George Tollet, son of George (d c1718) of
Betley, disappointed his father by marrying Elizabeth
Oats, a Manx woman, and incurring debts.
Biddulph - Bridestones similar to forecourt tombs of
Isle of Man.
Kinver - Kinver likened to Isle of Man and other
places in an early C20 tourist advert (TB Jan 18 2001
p5).
Rugeley - William Palmer might have murdered a man
called Spurrier, a wealthy stagecoach driver from
Oncham, at the Marine Hotel, Crown St, Peel (A
Biography - looking back at The Rugeley Poisoner: Dr
William Palmer. Dave Lewis. 2003. p71).
Sheen - There is a field on the Sheen tithe award map
(1848) called The Isle of Man (land straddling the rive
Dove) (SLS p50).
Stoke - The Isle of Man Natural History and
Antiquarian Society (1879) was modelled on the NSFC;
Robert Garner helped inspire it (NSFCT 1949 p39).
Stoke - Couple charged with stealing from a shop at
Port Erin (ES March 13 1939 p1ps).
Walsall - Aeroplane bound for Isle of Man crashed at
Bloxwich.

SCOTLAND

Armitage - Sir William de Handsacre, killed by Sir
Robert Mavesyn 1403, descended from the Kings of
Scotland, through his great grandfather marrying
(c1250) Ada, 4th dau and co-heir of David , Earl of
Huntingdon, on whose line devolved the right to the
crown of Scotland (he being younger brother of William
and grandson of David, King of Scotland (SHOS vol I
p208).
Rowley Regis - A Scotsman murdered in Cherry Orchard
in C17 returns to haunt the area (BCWJ p105).
Stoke - Gordon Mitchell Forsyth, pottery designer,
born Fraserburgh 1879.
Stoke - Stoke-on-Trent branch of the Black Watch
Regtimental Association, formed 1968 by Frank Bailey
of Hanley, was in 2006 the biggest outside Scotland
(ES Sept 21 2006 p11).
Wolstanton - Dr Henry Faulds (1843-1930), born Beith,
Ayrshire; first to use use fingerprints to identify
criminals when in Japan 1874-85. Lived in James St,
Wolstanton, buried Wolstanton churchyard (ES Sept 16
2006 p12).

WALES

Audley - Talke o’ th’ Hill male voice choir were Welsh
National Eisteddfod winners 1933 at Wrexham; but their
winning resulted in a change of rules to ban English
choirs from competing (ES Your Week March 3 2007 p9).

Cauldon - Anglesey natives - in particular from Penysarn, SE of
Amlwch - migrated to work Cauldon Low quarries in the period
1853-1903 (The Limestone Quarries of Caldon Low. Basil Jeuda. 2000)

Colton - Tenby misericords
Kingsley - Welsh community at Froghall (ES March 2
1939 p9).
Lichfield - The Chad Gospels, of ?740-50 AD, has
earliest surviving written Welsh inscription (Three
Spires: Friends of Lichfield Cathedral Newsletter.
Spring 2006).
Lichfield - Anna Williams (1706-83) born Rhosmarket,
nr Haverfordwest, poetess and friend of Dr Johnson.
Lichfield - Monument by the river in the grounds of
Gwaenynog Hall to commemorate a visit to Wales by Dr
Samuel Johnson as guest of Mrs Thrale, afterwards Mrs
Piozzi; the NSFC visited it in June 1936 and left a
bouquet with the inscription ‘A tribute from
Staffordshire people to a Staffordshire man’ (NSFCT
1936 pp71,72).
Norton-in-the-Moors - Chains for Menai Suspension
Bridge were forged at Norton Green.
Old Swinford (Amblecote) - Thomas Hill of Dennis Hall
and his brother-in-law Thomas Hopkins (d1793) began
iron works in a Welsh Valley, 1789, which created the
town of Blaenavon, where there was a row of cottages
for workers called Staffordshire Row (TB March 8 2001
p10).
Stoke - Stoke-on-Trent Children’s Holiday and
Convalescent Home was situated in Chester Street,
Rhyl. It gave holiday accommodation to deprived
children from the Potteries, 1925-75 (ES Your Week
April 22 2006 p7).
Stoke - James Garner (c1851-1905) pottery worker of
Hanley was the first English conductor to win the
principal prize at the Welsh National Eisteddfod (POTP
p100).
Tixall - Stone cross brought from a ruined mansion in
South Wales and erected on Queen’s or King’s Low (SOS
p70).
Wolstanton - Welsh communities at Mow Cop (where
houses called Welsh Row in Biddulph parish),
Kidsgrove, and Tunstall (ES March 2 1939 p9).
Wolverhampton - Charles Claudius Phillips, violinist,
born Wales, buried St Peters 1732
